Parallel Activities

The São Paulo ISFF features a series of activities that take place outside the circuit of the official exhibition halls. Training activities in partnership with audiovisual schools and aimed at young filmmakers, meetings, debates and masterclasses with national and foreign guests, book releases, happy hours and presentations of special programs in schools of São Paulo municipal network are some of these activities, detailed on each schedule. 

KINOFORUM LABS bring together two different initiatives aimed at developing, disseminating and marketing short films, with technical training, masterclasses and workshops. In a space specially created in Cinemateca Brasileira for the activity. Participation happens through previous registrations already made and has the support of Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (FSA). See below the proposed activities:

SHORT PROJECTS

It is a laboratory of development of short-film audiovisual projects that takes place during the Festival. It has activities in different axes of work, in the areas of script and direction, production and promotion and dissemination. Each area is coordinated by an expert who works with the participants in their projects collectively, sharing their experience and pointing out the essential characteristics of each project.

CARLA GALLO

Develops the documentary feature film “Para o meu vizinho de sonhos”, contemed by the Prodav/FSA and Doctoring/Spcine edicts. She has graduated and has a masters degree at ECA-USP, in the audiovisual area, and since then works in the direction, creation of scripts and documentary production for film, video and TV. She is cowriter of the series "Angeli, the Killer", frst and second seasons (Canal Brasil/FSA). Held the feautures "Assim é, se lhe Parece" and "O Aborto dos Outros".  Directed, produced and wrote “Meninas”, "Tom Zé ou Quem irá colocar uma dinamite na cabeça do século?".

DANIEL SOLÁ SANTIAGO

Autodidact, the producer and documentary filmmaker has a wide experience in the audiovisual area, from productions of internal institutional videos and advertising pieces to participation in productions of films, such as “Eles não usam Black Tie”, “Pixote”, “Carandiru”, “The Emerald Forest”, among others. He directed and produced the documentary films "Família Alcântara", “Coração do Brasil" and "Ecos do Teatro Experimental do Negro".

REBECA MAFRA

Journalist graduated in PUC-Rio, worked at video producers, advertising agencies and television channels. Specialized in curatorship and programming, focused on Brazilian and Latin American cinema, was part of the team of the channel GNT and TV Globo.

In 2010, she began to work at Canal Brasil, evaluating and negotiating Brazilian and international content. Currently integrates the Content Acquisition team, being responsible for the evaluation of formats, interface with producers and distributors, negotiation and drafting of licensing contracts and representation of Canal Brasil in business rounds, pitchings and film festivals.

KINOFORUM LABS bring together two different initiatives aimed at developing, disseminating and marketing short films, with technical training, masterclasses and workshops. In a space specially created in Cinemateca Brasileira for the activity. Participation happens through previous registrations already made and has the support of Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (FSA). 

It is oriented to the filmmakers of the short films selected for this edition of the Short Film Festival to have projects that develop their first feature film to be publicly displayed, seeking to strengthen their project in a meeting with experts.

This year, the edition of the laboratory is exclusively aimed at filmmakers who are women (cis or trans) with films selected for the Festival. The aim is to promote the cinematographic production performed by women in Brazil.

LÍVIA PEREZ

Filmmaker, producer and researcher. Directed "Lampião da Esquina " (2016) and “Quem matou Eloá?”, awarded and exhibited at various festivals. She produced the animation "Carne" (dir. Camila Kater, 2019). She was the curator and organizer of the shows "Cinema of Margarethe Von Trotta" and "Cineclube das Outras", besides having participations in the selection committees of the International Festival of Short Films of São Paulo and Festival Mix Brasil de Diversidade. She currently develops doctoral research in audiovisual media and processes at ECA-USP.

MINOM PATEL

Partner-Director of Casa Redonda, works in the art and culture sectors as a producer, consultant, lecturer and researcher. She signs the design, planning and production of films, exhibitions and creative platforms, including design and management of private cultural investment funds for companies. She produces films, series and documentaries. She is dedicated to the design and management of creative platforms to leverage new talents and new business in the artistic and audiovisual sector. She teaches courses and lectures on creative entrepreneurship and cultural management throughout Brazil.

BARBARA STURM

She has been operating in the market for film marketing since 2007. Graduated in cinema and postgraduated in digital mobilization, she participated in international programs of specialization in film distribution. Worked as a programmer for the Cine Belas Artes for four years and as director of the distributor Pandora Filmes, responsible for the acquisition and strategy of launching in Brazil of 34 Brazilian and international films. At the beginning of 2017 she assumed as director of content in the Distributor and international sales agent Elo Company.

MASTERCLASS: Narratives and filmmaking

Director Jorge Furtado completes 60 years-old and his best known and award-winning short film "Ilha das Flores" reaches the age of 30. The director speaks to the audience about his work and his short film, and his extensive narrative and directing experience.

Mediation: Pedro Falcão

Three game industry and immersive narratives professionals approach the production of a game script from their experiences. Maíra Testa, game designer at Rogue Snail, will talk about her experience as a freelance screenwriter for projects like "DeMagnete VR" from BitCake Studio. Barbara Framil, narrative designer at ARVORE Immersive Experiences, discusses the Virtual Reality game “Pixel Ripped 1995”. Mariana Brecht, narrative designer at Arvore Immersive Experiences, talks about the projects “The Line” and “Y.U.K.I.”

MASTERCLASS: Multidisciplinary Audiovisual

Barbara Wagner (Brasilia, 1980) and Benjamin de Burca (Munich, 1975) develop a collaborative practice with those they portray. Their films take the form of musicals that defy genre conventions as the fictional and documentary dimensions become hybrid to establish a third language territory. The duo participates in festivals around the world. 

MASTERCLASS: New technologies create new narratives. Where are we and where are we going?

The director and videomaker Tadeu Jungle discusses the new immersive technologies and their application in documentary works. 
LECTURE: Internet of Things or Internet things: how do we prepare for this digital transformation?

Ericsson's economist Marcelo Goldstein discusses technology and its influence on human relations, transforming mobility, access to information and consequently work relations. Internet of Things, 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning are some examples of these transformations.

The Kinoforum Guide of Festivals completes 20 years and invites the international curators Calmin Borel (Clermont-Ferrand ISFF, France), Herbert Schwarze (Oberhausen ISFF, Germany), Juhani Alanen (Tampere FF, Finland), Karen Black (S. Maria da Feira, Portugal) and Sanghoon Lee (Busan ISFF, Korea) to talk about the importance of international festivals in the diffusion of short films.

LECTURE: from Plato to Artificial intelligence
AUGUST 26th [MON] – 2:00 p.m to 3:30 p.m. – CINEMATECA

From the shadows projected on the cave wall and analyzed by Plato for 2500 years until artificial intelligence, the human relationship with the images and technology has changed a lot. François Serre is director of the  "Courant 3D ", Festival of Immersion and interactivity of Angoulême and curator of  "new technologies/new stories" for different festivals, including the Festival of Clermont-Ferrand and the Berlin Interfilm. He works as a professor specialized in classical and documentary music, as well as director of short films and documentaries. Regularly conducts training missions in film schools in the United States, Africa and Asia.

CINEMA DA VELA: The short film as a space of experimentation
CINESESC – AUGUST 27th [TUE] – 7:30 pm

The Cinema da Vela, a traditional event promoted by CineSesc Monthly, takes place within the short film Festival in August. The event will address the issue of short film and its trajectory as a space for experimentation. The table will include the participation of Patrícia Moran, full professor of the Audiovisual course of ECA-USP and Laís Bodanzky, filmmaker and director - President of Spcine.
The Short Film Festival always celebrates the partnership with the main audiovisual schools in Brazil, which send their films to the Student Showcase and to the student programs in the Brazilian Showcase, besides participating in various activities and actions proposed by us. ON VISION

Each year, Associação Cultural Kinoforum seeks to incorporate new views on the selection of the films. For this, besides composing its selection committee with the most diverse guests, it also invites students and new graduates who participated in other activities in the last editions to watch some of the films in the selection process and record their opinions. This year, students from 10 educational institutions participated.

ON PROGRAMMING

Sessions of up to 80 minutes, followed by debates, with curatorship of the films made by the schools' students from the films selected for the Brazilian Showcase – and displayed in the educational institutions themselves during the Festival period.This year, students give their colleagues the programming of the Festival with their own views, in sessions held in several regions of São Paulo - in the city, participate in the activity ECA-USP, Universidade São Judas, Universidade Anhembi-Morumbi, Academia Internacional de Cinema (AIC), FAAP, Senac Santo Amaro, ETEC Roberto Marinho, FIAM FAAM. In other cities of the state, students from UFScar, UNICAMP, Escola Livre de Cinema e Vídeo (ELCV), CAV São Bernardo participate. 

MAKING OF

A team of the communication and multimedia course at PUC-SP will be accompanying and recording all the schedule of the 30th Short Film Festival to produce the making of. Always under the supervision of the school staff, students do interviews, document the public and the team in action. The result will be available on the Festival website in the end. 

KINO NIGHT

The 11 partner schools in the state of São Paulo indicate a group of students to participate in this achievement game. It all starts at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the 24th, with a breakfast. The participants meet and receive the theme, which serves as inspiration for their productions, and then go out to perform the projects, which are presented by them and exhibited on the night of August 26th, at Cinemateca Brasileira. The exhibition is free and open to the public and the films will be reprised on August 28th, at 6:00 p.m., at Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS).

Monitoring

A team of 40 monitors work in our exhibition rooms or at the Festival's production base, supporting filmmakers, audiences and staff to make everything happen with the highest possible quality and ease.We receive candidates from various universities and all ages. It is an excellent opportunity for students to be introduced to the environment of an audiovisual festival, accompanying directors and producers from various countries, as well as attending the public. Participants receive a small cost and easy access to all programming.

Spcine Circuit is a project that brings the experience of cinema to several regions of the capital of São Paulo, from the modernization of the existing exhibition rooms and with the creation of a regular schedule in these locations.

The locations were chosen to ensure access to areas not attended or poorly attended by commercial cinemas, with equipment from the City Hall of São Paulo. This year, the Festival's special sessions take place at CEU Vila Atlântica, CEU Caminho do Mar and CEU Perus.

In two full days of encounters – August 24th and 29th – the Short Film Festival returns to bring together national and foreign guests to discuss the commercial viability of the audiovisual in short film.

The Shorts and Market – meeting of professionals on the commercialization of short-term audiovisual content includes rounds of business between agents, filmmakers and players who exhibit and license the format, and also brings filmmakers, curators and producers to talk about your experience in the marketplace.
The event relies on the financing of Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (FSA).

The programmer of the Busan International Short Film Festival in South Korea, one of the most important movie festivals in Asia, addresses the Korean production, the most famous short films and prizes won by the country, as well as the importance of festivals and markets for networking and diffusion of short film on various platforms.

Sanghoon Lee is a professor at Chonnam National University and the National University of Chonbuk in South Korea. A specialist in the field of cinema and audiovisual arts, he has acted as a programmer in various events and institutions.

Janaína Tadeu, Canal Arte1: The channel acquires on average ten short films per year, especially with works of fiction that possess an artistic aesthetic treatment and linear narratives, and documentary works on topics related to the world of the arts.

Luis Carlos Soares, Bambu Filmes: Short films curatorship, focusing on fiction films, whose narratives encompass culture in its different manifestations, including contexts and dialogues with childhood, environment, gender issues, health, seniors and topics addressing digital inclusion.

Rebeca Mafra, Canal Brasil: Canal Brasil acquires short films for its regular programming, negotiating case by case in each acquisition.

Marina Kezen, Curta!: The channel operates on two fronts: acquisition of ready content (finalized short films) and pre-licensing works via FSA.

Luisa Paes, Elo Company: Works with acquisition of finalized short films.

Alexandre David and Danielle Lopes, Encryta (Looke): Short film negotiation on the Looke platform, on current topics.

Daniela Gouveia, Lança Filmes: Career quality and possibility in festivals. It represents around five short films a year.

Roberto Lima, Lira Filmes: Works in partnership with producers in co-production processes, with works focused on specific niches. Develops the communication and commercialization strategy based on this perception of the target audience.

Margot Brandão, O2 Play: Audiovisual distribution service including film-room launches, TV licensing, VOD and other media in Brazil and abroad, acting as a sales agency and national distributor.

Sidênia Freire, SescTV: Acquires short films periodically, through curatorship projects for thematic blocks and awards at national festivals.

Leticia Santinon, SPCine: Invests in the short film through production notices, exhibition in cinemas in the Spcine circuit and streaming in Spcine Play.

Priscilla Ferri, Turner: Acquires short films accessible to the channles’ target audience, specifically short films of specific genres (comedy, action, for kids, etc.). It gives preference for short films that have over 10 ' to 20 '.

Juhani Alanen, Tampere Film Festival: Newly founded short film agency for short distribution. In English.
